Tip-up!

While my busy schedule and an unseasonably warm beginning to December have not allowed for any ice fishing yet, I've got the itch to drill some holes.

Hopefully after the holiday season is over, I'll be able to make the treck up to the family cabin in northern Wisconsin to try my hand at some tip-up fishing and perhaps some jigging as well.

While the lake that my family's cabin is not the greatest for trophy fish, there are plenty of northern pike and panfish to keep any fisherman busy and the set up couldn't be better.

As soon as I do hit the ice, I'll report back here with the results. And good luck to all the other ice fisherman out there.

Interesting stuff from The Northwestern...is Walleye Weekend in for some big changes?

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has initiated a hearing process to make changes to the rules regarding large fishing tournaments in the state.

The number of such tournaments has risen from 300 to 400 in the last 10 years and the rules would, as Streetwise understands them, require the immediate release of fish caught in such tournaments in order to protect the resource.

This could have a huge impact here in Winnebago County where a recent study by the UW-Extension found recreational and tournament fishing contributes $221.5 million to the economies along Lakes Winnebago, Butte des Morts and Poygan. These tourneys bring in big bucks and tourism folks believe new rules and restrictions could send these events to other states.

A quick synopsis of the issue can be found here: http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/ce/news/DNRNews_Lookup.asp?id=34#art2
